Movie Summary
Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is a silent German Expressionist horror film directed by F.W. Murnau, loosely based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Due to copyright issues, the film alters names and details but retains the core vampire mythos.
The story follows Thomas Hutter, a real estate agent, who travels to Transylvania to finalize a deal with the mysterious Count Orlok. Hutter’s journey is filled with eerie warnings from the locals about the vampire’s sinister nature.
Upon arriving at Orlok’s castle, Hutter soon realizes his host is no ordinary man—Orlok is a terrifying creature with elongated fingers, a gaunt face, and a thirst for blood. As Hutter struggles to escape, Orlok travels to the city of Wisborg, bringing with him death and plague.
Hutter’s wife, Ellen, learns that the only way to defeat the vampire is to sacrifice herself by keeping him occupied until sunrise. She bravely lures Orlok into her bedroom, where he becomes entranced by her beauty and drinks her blood.
As dawn breaks, the first rays of sunlight destroy the vampire, turning him to dust.
Nosferatu is renowned for its haunting cinematography, eerie atmosphere, and the iconic portrayal of Count Orlok by Max Schreck. Despite its legal controversies, the film remains a seminal work in horror cinema, influencing generations of filmmakers.
Its shadowy imagery and chilling villain continue to captivate audiences, cementing Nosferatu as a classic of the silent film era.
